Back Once Again for the Renegade Master
Well this is ridiculous. In the past few months I've redesigned this site almost as often as I've posted blog entries. No more I tell you, if for no other reason than I'm sick of spending time re-writing my own mark-up. It's high time I was posting something entertaining, or otherwise, on the site itself once more.
I'm sure I mentioned I'd probably tire of the previous redesign quickly, and I did. I'm not going to go into the reasons why, nor am I going to go into a long-winded rationale about what's new in this redesign. If I have any readers left, I'm sure you'll be able to see that for yourselves.
So, stopping short of an essay, here's what's new, or substantially changed in this version of kitsimons.com.
- Notes. Brief items of interest that don't warrant an article being written about them, but which I'd still like to mention. This alone should mean the site is updated much more frequently.
- New logo. Yay!
- Section layouts fit for purpose, as opposed to the one-size fits all approach previously adopted.
- Further to the layout point, the homepage is now a proper homepage i.e. a gateway to various parts of the site, rather than a duplicate of the journal section.
- Random phrase on the homepage, time specific. Shown in lovely Helvetica if you're lucky enough to have it installed (Arial if not). Who needs a banner image, eh?
- Search has been removed. Is it needed? I don't think so with the site as it stands.
Most of what's changed is cosmetic, though there are some under-the-hood tweaks. The most notable of these is to the way in which articles are displayed. I'm now making use of Textpattern's excerpt field, which helps with the layout and can be used in the RSS feed rather than an article in its entirety. Unfortunately this change required my going through every article I've posted and re-formatting each slightly to work within the new framework. Boy was that a laborious task. I hadn't realised quite how many articles I'd managed to post over the space of 18 months.
Right, enough rambling about another redesign. Back to the serious task of blogging... after I've had a beer...

Notes
- Nice Nike Football ad from Madonna's better half.
- Top marks for the realigned BBC News website, bringing it more in line with the lovely new, jQuery driven, BBC homepage.
Beautiful full-screen image browsing served up by the snazzy PicLens plug-in. Impressive, though practicality is debatable.- Yahoo shifts to search the
semantic web
. Potentially huge, and very welcome news for usstandards nuts
.
The Coke Zero Game. Latest masterpiece from the infuriatingly talented North Kingdom.
It's sites like the Red Bull Flight Lab that remind you what Flash is for. Brilliant application and an awful lot of fun.- Rejoice! The new Indiana Jones trailer has finally made an appearance. Can't wait.
- Help the Email Standards Project get Google's attention in the hope they will finally improve Gmail's awful rendering of HTML email.
- Awesome panoramic view of the Airbus A380 cockpit interior. This is the super-future.
- Excellent article from accessibility supremo Roger Johansson on how inappropriate, or overuse, of HTML features meant to aid accessibility can actually have the opposite effect.

Blimy, it’s changed again!! I really like this one. I don’t normally go for fixed backdrops, but here it really works well. I love the dark tarnished metal look with the overlying white text – very striking :) I really like the branding too. It kind of reminds me of those tags you find on the seam of your jeans, but the font kinda makes me feel like there’s a touch of zen to it or something.
Overall really great redesign Kit – very nice indeed, and I feel an improvement over the last version :) Keep it up!

Cheers mate. Appreciate it. The logo does look very denim-ish, although that wasn’t the intent when I started out :-)

Is it just me, or does the tag have a very faint drop shadow?

If you’re using anything but Internet Explorer 6, yes it does have a slight shadow.
