Finnish Candy Artwork

I've always thought the artwork on bags of Finnish candy was odd. Disgusting characters and dark, grubby colours. In fact, the exact opposite of what the rest of the World puts on bags of candy to appeal to kids.

Take the following, which illustrate things perfectly. I think they're bloody marvelous - so much more fun than anything sold here in the UK.

Bags of Finnish candy

They're all bags of Salmiakki, a sour tasting sweet that most of Scandinavia is crazy about. Salty liquorice is the best way to describe the taste to someone who hasn't tried Salmiakki. Whatever way you put it, I find them horrible.

Starting on the left, Tsaukki Taukki written on the donkey's shirt, is a phrase that translates as Ciao (Hi) Idiot.

The bag of sweets in the centre are called Salmiakki Bells, bells in this instance being slang for testicles. But I'm sure you've guessed that from the picture.

The final bag obviously speaks for itself. Quite how they get away with calling a bag of sweets Bull Shit, even in a country where English isn't the mother tongue, is beyond me. You'd be hard pressed to find an individual of any age in Finland who doesn't know what shit means.

Hmmm… I eat any kind of sweets going, but I draw the line at salty liquorice – I’m guessing that the stuff I tried from IKEA is pretty similar. It were grim, I tell thee.

Yep – foul tasting things. The salmiakki-based alcoholic drink is a different story, however. I could drink that stuff all night.
