Look Ma, Some Decent Sci-Fi
Surprisingly there's quite a bit of decent sci-fi around at the moment. Shocking, I know. Equally surprising, things continue to look rosy for the sci-fi aficionado given what 2008 is set to serve up.
All of this has me pretty excited, so I thought I'd put my sci-fi nerd cap squarely on my head and talk about it.
Comedy
Yesterday, my copy of Family Guy, Blue Harvest landed on the doorstep. Blue Harvest, aside from being the working title for Return of the Jedi, is the name given to the Family Guy Star Wars Episode IV parody.

Clocking in at double the length of the average Family Guy episode (one hour), Blue Harvest is a treat for any fan of the series. Doubly so, if like me, you happen to be a bit of a Star Wars nut.
Blue Harvest is hilarious, and well worth investing in. I'd suggest plumping for the Special Edition box set, which also contains a Blue Harvest t-shirt, 2 pairs of 3D glasses, a booklet and a set trading cards, as well as having more goodies on the DVD. The box artwork is also freakin' sweet.
Television
Next up is the Battlestar Galactica Razor DVD. I tend to bang on about Galactica quite a bit, but I do have a good reason: Galactica is the best sci-fi there has been, on any format, for a long, long time.

Razor covers events between seasons 2 and 3, as well as serving up flashbacks dealing with events on Pegasus at the time of the Cylon attack, as well as flashbacks to a mission involving a young Adama during the first Cylon war.
When I found out Razor would feature an appearance from the original chrome Cylon models, as seen in the original 70's Galactica TV series, I was worried about how they would pull it off without making the old Cylons look, well, crap. Thankfully, my concerns were unfounded. As usual the Galactica team did a bang up job, and even managed to make the original Cylons seem, dare I say it, menacing.
The final scenes of Razor bring us a revelation that ties in with the events of season 3, and leaves things on a knife-edge as we move into season 4 (a sneak peak of which is included on the Razor DVD). Personally, I can't wait.
Film
Moving from the small screen to the silver screen, 2008 looks set to be a decent year for sci-fi movies, if only because the end of the year will see the release of an eleventh Star Trek movie.
Normally, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at anything coming out of the Star Trek franchise. I haven't particularly enjoyed anything Star Trekkie since the Next Generation. However, Star Trek is already generating positive rumblings. The movie is being helmed by J.J. Abrams, who's work I've generally liked (Lost, Mission Impossible 3 and the supposedly brilliant Cloverfield), and will chart the early days of James Tiberius Kirk and the USS Enterprise.

There isn't much in the way of information out there just yet. A teaser trailer that gives little away and an image of the Enterprise under construction is about all there is to go on for now.
Still, hopefully Abrams will breathe fresh life into the franchise and deliver an entertaining hit. I'm sure there'll be uproar from die-hard fans if the movie deviates too far from the standard Star Trek affair, or diddles with the continuity, but personally I think Star Trek needs to do something different.

The Family Guy Episode IV spoof is possibly the best FG ever… Peter’s Han Solo is worth the price alone. Got a slightly wooly copy from Bit Torrent a while ago, as felt a bit cheated it was not included in the Series5 boxset… On the strength of the episode, I reckon I’ll make the purchase!! Tom.

You could be right about it being the best Family Guy episode ever, Tom. Even if people aren’t a Star Wars fan, there’s a lot to get out of it. But if viewers a Star Wars fan as well, boy are they in for a treat.
