Seduced by the Dark Side
Well, it's about bloody time that I did something. And what better way to get back into the swing of things with a fresh new design for the website?
I've been hankering for a light-on-dark design for some time now, so I'm pleased it is finally here. I can only hope that the novelty doesn't wear off in a matter of weeks - though I'm not holding my breathe...
When I first thought about moving to a light-on-dark design, I had intended to simply re-skin the previous website. However, down to me being me it quickly turned into a full rebuild.
That itself is no bad thing. It meant I do whatever I wanted - something more appropriate for where I am right now. It also allowed me to clean up my CSS, which has resulted in some much cleaner code as well as various techniques refined since the previous incarnation.
I've made the decision to push the new design live now mainly to force me into finishing it properly. That's right - there's plenty still to do. This is very much a live redesign in progress. As such, if you happen across any bugs (layout or otherwise) in any browser please let me know about it.
In so far as I'm aware, the following issues are outstanding;
- The site search has inexplicably stopped working.
- Print stylesheet still to do (Lord only knows who would print any of my pages, but it makes me feel warm and cosy inside knowing it's there).
- Stylesheet switcher to be implemented.
- Portfolio to be updated and tidied up.
- Checking through previous journal entries for any legacy mark-up that may be causing problems.
- General tidying up of the Journal.
That aside, things are looking pretty rosy.
As always, any questions, comments or criticisms are welcomed - it's nice to know what the little people think (joke).
A new site, and a new state of mind. It's time to start blogging again... I'm feeling in the mood... See you out there.

Notes
- Nice Nike Football ad from Madonna's better half.
- Top marks for the realigned BBC News website, bringing it more in line with the lovely new, jQuery driven, BBC homepage.
Beautiful full-screen image browsing served up by the snazzy PicLens plug-in. Impressive, though practicality is debatable.- Yahoo shifts to search the
semantic web
. Potentially huge, and very welcome news for usstandards nuts
.
The Coke Zero Game. Latest masterpiece from the infuriatingly talented North Kingdom.
It's sites like the Red Bull Flight Lab that remind you what Flash is for. Brilliant application and an awful lot of fun.- Rejoice! The new Indiana Jones trailer has finally made an appearance. Can't wait.
- Help the Email Standards Project get Google's attention in the hope they will finally improve Gmail's awful rendering of HTML email.
- Awesome panoramic view of the Airbus A380 cockpit interior. This is the super-future.
- Excellent article from accessibility supremo Roger Johansson on how inappropriate, or overuse, of HTML features meant to aid accessibility can actually have the opposite effect.

I like it. I don’t have anything particularly insightful to add but the birds are nice.
My only suggestion would be a slight increase to the line-height on paragraphs and lists. That I suppose is personal preference though.

Thanks Andrew. You know what – I think you’re right about the line height. I’ve upped it a notch.
