Tasty New Gmail Labels

So, I signed in to my Gmail account this evening and something didn't feel right. Something almost imperceptible had changed.

After squinting at my inbox for a spell, I realised that Gmail's status message block had moved to a new spot and was sporting a new pastel shade.

Gmail label colours

Digging around the interface some more, I noticed that I could now assign colours to my various labels which would then be reflected on the message itself. Very Mac OS label-like in its application, and very, very nice.

I know Google has a habit of rolling out Gmail updates in an almost haphazard fashion. Even though I haven't come across any mention of them on the Interweb, I'm sure label colours have been around for some time - appearing first on the accounts of a handful of randomly selected Gmail users and gradually being rolled out to others.

I don't care if I am late to the party. I love pleasant little surprises like that. It was unexpected and a nice little treat. Thank you Gmail. My important messages are easier to find and my inbox looks much prettier now.

I seem to have gotten some version of this update but I just have a new location and pastel shade to my “loading” box… nothing loads. I cannot open emails though I can delete them. I have to use the older version to read. I am bummed. Any ideas?

Hi Ijar. There’s definitely some performance/stability issues with this newer version. My browser hangs occasionally when moving between different folders (usually from the inbox to spam folder).

Aside from using the older version, I think it’s a case of waiting for Google to iron out the bugs, I’m afraid…
